The Best Announcer in The World
Don't know if you guys are into soccer or not, but I've been totally binging on the Euro '08 tournament on ESPN, and just want to give a shout out to the announcer Andy Gray, who's probably the greatest commentator of any sport I've ever heard. The guys is Scottish and speaks with an accent so thick that he sounds like one of the guys from "Trainspotting," (not that I'm old enough to have horked my Dad's copy of that film and watched it like fifteen times, at least the parts that aren't seriously disturbing/a bummer/something I wish I hadn't seen in the first place) -- which is to say you can barely understand a word that he's saying. But when you do, the guy is so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate and literally everything he says comes off as a combination of poetry and pay-off one liners from all your favorite action flicks. And if you've ever watched a whole soccer game, where a lot of times not much is really happening, listening to this guy fill the space is music to your ears. His partner is pretty sweet, too. Right now, I'm hoping the Spaniards can take out the Russians in the semis then kick the Germans butts in the final. But whoever wins, it's made for great theater, and even better way to waste away the opening days of the summer...
If you can't catch today's game, check out the Finals on Sunday at 2:30. You won't be disappointed...
P.S. 0-0 in the first half.
